The Scent of Summer

To some, the smell of charcoal food is synonymous with the scent of summer. The highest court in Bavaria, however, does not appear to share this view. This week it has decreed that barbecues are "an affront to civilised society". The culprit's use of the communal garden, where he practiced his alfresco grilling skills, was restricted after he was sued by a neighbour living on the second storey of his apartment block. A lower court originally had recommended a complete ban, but on appeal this ruling was partially relaxed. As long as the outdoor chef confined his activities to the far end of the garden he would be allowed to stage five barbecues a year.
